Key Learnings
SOWK 610 & 616 Advance Trauma Interventions in Diverse Contexts: Margaret Miles, Instructor
This course delved into advanced trauma interventions, taking into account complicating factors when applying best practices and techniques in clinical practice with a diverse range of populations. We emphasized the importance of catering to the needs of specific groups, including Indigenous Canadians and other minorities. Additionally, we developed and practiced self-care techniques.
SOWK 600 Social Justice & Theory in ASWP:
Anne Marie McLaughlin, Instructor

We took a close look at the theoretical perspectives of social justice to evaluate its practical application. We also explored how our assumptions and how our social location can impact our pursuit of social justice. Additionally, we examined the structural and systematic barriers that hinder the achievement of a more equitable society.

Navigating Multiple Identities: A Personal and Structural Analysis
On a personal level, I identify as a First Nation individual who has been subject to various layers of the Indian Act. However, when we examine the social-structural level, my graduate-level education provides me with unique opportunities to succeed.
As an Indigenous person, my main focus has been empowering my fellow Indigenous individuals. However, I must be cautious since I can still inadvertently contribute to oppression within my community. Additionally, while trying to navigate the intersections of helping others while out in the community, I can still be a victim of lateral violence.
These intersections produce divergent outcomes depending on the variable micro & macro intersections.

During my graduate studies, I undertook research on decolonization and have since applied this perspective to my work. This approach has allowed me to avoid complicity in my own oppression and honor the lived experiences of those with intersectional marginalization. By challenging systematic oppression, I have helped individuals experiencing marginalization and powerlessness.
Typically, these truths are ignored in favor of a narrative that perpetuates oppression.

SOWK 612, Trauma Impacts and Interventions across the Life Span: Angelique Jenney, Instructor
Our study delved into the fundamentals of assessment and intervention to analyze the effects of traumatic events at different stages of a person's life. We also examined the implications for future growth and development. Additionally, we explored various wellness strategies for social workers who practice clinically.
SOWK 662A & B S08 Integrative Seminar:
Lateef Habib, Instructor
Emphasis will be placed on the integration of research, theory and social work practice with personal and professional development. At the master's level, students are leaders within the social work profession. Discussions focused on contributing to the profession and the body of knowledge.

Disruptive Inclusionist
I openly talked with my supervisor about the microaggression that I was experiencing, and we addressed this together. As, I had outgrown my old identity of avoiding conflict, I was more aligned with the fact that spaces need to be diverse, equal, and inclusive and prepared to take on that challenge humbly and respectfully.
All relationships have now been repaired, and a new and improved approach is being taken that honours safety in a way that openly challenges the status quo while working through disagreements.
