Learnings

About Dana

I am Dana Nepoose, a social worker, counsellor, and community advocate. I hold a Master of Social Work degree and have dedicated my career to supporting children, youth, families, and communities through counselling, training, and policy work.

As a Cree woman, my practice is deeply influenced by Indigenous ways of knowing and the teachings that remind us of the importance of balance, relationships, and connection to Mother Earth. These values guide how I walk alongside clients — with respect, humility, and a commitment to honouring each person’s story.

My professional journey has included working in child and family services, developing policies and programs, providing training for caregivers and supervisors, and creating spaces for leadership development. Through this work, I have seen how trauma, colonization, and systemic barriers impact individuals and communities — and how healing becomes possible when people are supported with compassion, safety, and culturally grounded care.

In my counselling practice, I integrate trauma-informed, client-centred, narrative, feminist, polyvagal, anti-oppressive, and Indigenous approaches. Rather than relying on a single method, I braid these ways of practice together, allowing us to create a path that fits your strengths, needs, and vision for healing.

My goal is simple: to walk alongside you, whether in individual counselling, family work, or community training, and to support your journey toward balance, resilience, and hope.

Evaluation

  • Anti-oppressive, feminist and trauma-informed approach.

  • I employed an anti-oppressive and polyvagal approach

  • Longitudinal studies identified polyvagal theory as efficiently reducing trauma symptoms in adults who experienced sexual violence

  • In early polyvagal research, measurement and quantitative procedures were not standardized procedures (Porges, 2007).

  • Post-traumatic narratives tend to be frozen in time, are self-reinforcing, and are self-referential (Van Der Kolk, 2015)

  • Human Factor

Evidence-Based Theories

While talk therapy has been effective in helping clients process the sexual trauma experienced, it may not address the client's state of stored trauma (Richards, 2020).
